Bikram Yoga aka Hot Yoga questions?
I was wondering if anyone else took this before. I am going to give it a shot next week.
What is good to wear? Im not about to go buy a yoga outfit yet so I was wondering what would work best.
Any other suggestions or input is well appreciated as well!
Hi – good for you for trying something new! I go to Bikram Yoga 3x/week. I’ve been doing this for about 6 months. Before this I belonged to a gym but could somehow never seem to get myself there on a regular basis. Now I’ve lost 2 dress sizes and get a good workout a few days a week!
So here are some tips. The goal of your first class is to stay in the room the full 90-minutes. The room is heated as you know and the heat can be tough on people. Don’t be too hard on yourself – do what you can, sit down if you need to and enjoy your first class. The heat places a greater demand on the body in terms of using up calories, thus assists in fat loss.
Since it’s heated you’ll probably want to wear as little as possible – running shorts, sports bra and t-shirt. If you’re a man you can even consider going w/ no shirt. Plan on showering after & bring clothes to change in to b/c chances are your yoga/workout clothes will be soaked.
Which brings up another point – sweating. You will sweat – take off your makeup before you go in! Sweating is an important part of maintaining optimum physical health.
Of course, the kidneys take out many of the daily environmental toxins you encounter but a daily sweat can help reduce the body’s accumulation of lead, mercury and nickel in addition to cadmium, sodium, sulfuric acid and cholesterol.
Here are some other benefts you can expect from sweating because of the heat:
* Speeds up metabolic processes of vital organs and inhabits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and viruses. The vital organs and glands (including endocrine and sex glands) are stimulated to increased activity.
* Creates a fever reaction that kills potentially dangerous viruses/bacteria and increase the number of leukocytes in the blood, thereby strengthening the immune system.
* Places demands upon the cardiovascular system, making the heart pump harder and producing a drop in diastolic blood pressure.
* Stimulates vasodilation of peripheral vessels, which relieves pain and speeds healing of sprains, strains, bursitis, peripheral vascular diseases, arthritis and muscle pain.
* Promotes relaxation, thereby lending a feeling of well-
being.
You’ll definitely feel clean & have a natural high. You might be sore. The trick is to go back the next day and re-do it all over again!
