Can a blind Become a master of yoga?
Recently, I came across a case where a Hatha Yoga teacher, who had been teaching for years, denied from a Hatha Yoga teacher training course. Before anyone gets up on this, and the Law on the Affairs of Persons with Disabilities in the United States, this story gets better.
His wife is also a Hatha Yoga teacher, and teaching yoga as a team. However, we still was denied the opportunity for certification as a teacher of Hatha Yoga. At this point, you might be thinking in the law to deny anyone equal opportunities. I am not a lawyer but this sounds like a viable case for me.
Do you think the organization of Yoga, who refused this gentleman the right to participate in the course of Yoga teacher training, consulted his attorney before making this decision? Frankly, I doubt it, and the idea of an organization showing discriminatory Yoga ruling goes against the purpose of yoga.
Yoga means union or unity. Where is the "unity" in the discrimination? Discrimination originates from a closed mind. Discrimination works closely with intolerance and may lead to unwarranted acceptance of blatant lies, or worse.
It is the moral of this issue that should concern us all. It's hard to imagine being blind every day, with so many things most of us take for granted.
If you have a tour below what it feels like to be blind, close your eyes, and within minutes his other senses better. Ever notice that your hearing improves, when I try to meditate? Try to move without having to open your eyes, but be careful.
When you shut off one of his senses, the rest of your senses are sharpened, as a result of his "handicap". A blind teacher of Yoga most likely have a better cueing skills than most of us. With another Yoga teacher in the room, to help a student who receives the "best of both worlds."
That is why we have laws that protect everyone against discrimination. Sometimes, we think that common sense should govern our society, but as you know, does not always work well. Everyone should make a sincere effort to understand others.
We have an agreement on all issues, but different views, working together, make a healthy and creative in the world around us. And if a blind man has a desire to become a certified teacher of yoga, which has denied the moral right?
